Project: Foyles Chelmsford

Design: Lustedgreen
Opening date: September 2016
Store size: 400 sq m

Bookseller Foyles has opened a new store in Chelmsford's Bond Street retail development with a light, contemporary and vibrant interior.

Designed by Lustedgreen, the 400 sq m store is spread across two floors with a large double-height area at the entrance. The retailer's familiar red logo is displayed prominently in both the front and side double-height windows, creating a highly visible beacon at night.

There is a video wall in the shop window with changing displays and nine display monitors throughout the store, guiding customers from the ground floor to first floor.

'On entry to the store, which houses some 15,000 titles, customers are greeted with a "wall of books" - dramatic double-height bookshelves on the left, and facing them the message “Welcome book lover, you are among friends”,' explains a spokesperson for Lustedgreen. 'On the right, there is a washed oak staircase and large white feature wall with letter press "carved" in relief, illuminated stepped shelves displaying single titles, and digital display screens. The letter press theme is repeated on the dark-stained oak cash desk.'

At the rear of the store, on the ground floor, is a fun and vibrant children's area.

'Our store here is a real 21st century experience where technology enhances and improves our customer service without getting the way of what readers love most about bricks and mortar shopping experience,' says John Browne, finance director and head of real estate at Foyles. 'Real books are enjoying resurgence at the moment, and we have a fantastic range of lifestyle and children’s titles which we are sure will appeal to Bond Street shoppers.'

Coffee and pastries are available with seating areas on both floors to increase dwell time.

The flooring and shop fittings are in washed oak mfc, while accent red walls reflect Foyles’ trademark colours.

Departing from the standard straight lines and rectangles, the store features faceted bookshelves, creating a flowing, curved look that also serve to differentiate book subject areas.

The first floor doubles as a space for hosting author and other book-related events, and fittings are therefore more flexible to allow for different arrangements.

Foyles’ latest store in this rapidly growing city centre marries the much-loved physical bookshop with a fresh new design and the best of modern technology to offer Chelmsford customers an unrivalled book shop experience.
