Design: Lumsden Design
Opening date: June 2017
Store size: 100 sq m
New York's Museum of Modern Art has opened a Design Store in Japan, located in the Kyoto Prefecture District. Lumsden Design has developed the design aesthetic to the Kyoto shop from MoMa's flagship Design Store in New York City, which opened in October 2016.
Slatted maple timber defines the ceiling and the entrance, a theme used in the New York store’s feature mezzanine. The wall behind the cash and wrap displays best selling products such as the Aurora light.
The overall scheme is based on timber and the freestanding fixtures are bead-blasted stainless steel with a white sustainable Durat top.
'This design has been created specifically to introduce the new MoMA retail format to the Japanese market which has an absolute passion for shopping and design led products,' says Callum Lumsden, founder and creative director of Lumsden.
The Kyoto shop will stock an edited version of MOMA Design Store’s signature selection of table, desk and personal accessories, jewellery, furniture and lighting, tech products, children’s merchandise, art reproductions and stationery, including items from the MoMA Collection.
Lumsden is currently designing two new museum shops at MoMA in New York as part of the museum’s current redevelopment programme. Lumsden previously created MoMA concessions in Loft Shibuya and Loft Ikebukuro, both in Tokyo, in 2015.
