Strawberry Star’s landmark mixed-use development Lu2on, on the former Vauxhall factory site in London’s top commuter town Luton ((according to Yopa’s 2019 London Commuter Guide), has secured its first anchor tenant, Co-Op. The award-winning retailer will be leasing a 5,371 sq ft unit fronting Kimpton Road and Luton Airport Parkway Railway Station.

In prime position, within a new community, the new supermarket sits in part of a wider £400 million regeneration project, with a transport hub at its heart. The 877 households in the development will benefit from the new store, along with the 233 homes in a neighbouring new scheme as well as the wider and passing community.

Santhosh Gowda, Chairman of Strawberry Star comments: “We are delighted to be announcing our anchor tenant, Co-Op at our Lu2on scheme.  This is the first of many household brands that will be part of Lu2on going forward. The entry of Co-Op into our award-winning developments demonstrates confidence of retailers in our development and the area. Lu2on is not only integral to the regeneration of Luton, but also, contributing to the economic growth of the town by creating a vibrant new neighbourhood. We are anticipating many local and high street businesses to be part of Lu2on.”

Chris Barter, Co-op Acquisition Manager, adds: “We are excited to announce that we’ll be the anchor tenant at Lu2on, the area is undergoing a transformation with airport upgrades and better connectivity, and the team is really looking forward to serving the community. Co-op is committed to connecting communities and making a difference locally, and our aim is to operate at the heart of local life. We also want customers to know that they can become a Member of their Co-op, and make a difference every time they swipe their Membership card when buying own branded products.”

The Co-op picked up the “Convenience Retailer of the Year” and “Food-to-go Retailer of the Year” titles at the latest Retail Industry Awards. Students who are TOTUM cardholders – the new name for NUS extra – can pocket a 10% discount off groceries at the Co-Op.

Lu2on has won two awards – Best Mixed Use Development in the UK with a 5-star rating at the International Property Awards 2019 and the Best Offplan Development Award at the First Time Buyers Readers Award 2019. The development comprises 877 sleek apartments, an 8,000 sq.ft gym, perfect for active residents as well as a star hotel, restaurants and shopping. With off-plan sales soaring, Lu2on’s future community is beginning to take shape with phase one of Lu2on is expected to be complete by Q4 2021.
